Published: 1st May 2021

Bkk Unzine Issue 9

Welcome to BKK UNZINE art magazine, home to unseen independent artists from around the world.

The theme for the issue you’re about to be given first row seat to is MOVIES. The way we watch movies nowadays has changed, so just like the movies, this issue comes to you and will be available to read on demand online. We hope that the artists’ creative energy inspires you to keep creating in these difficult times.

And in order to be on brand with our current theme we also asked our Artists to recommend their favorite movies, so you have that to look forward to as well.

If you are an artist and you want to get featured, the next theme for the April issue #8 will be “FOOLS”, you can submit your artwork at this link:

Golden Days of Hollywood

Piya Golden days of Hollywood
Oil pastels on paper 50×60 cm

This painting is dedicated to Marilyn Monroe as an actress and singer. She is the ultimate female icon. Marilyn was a shining star and made the golden days of Hollywood unforgettable with her exquisite personality and style. Her movies “Niagara”, “Some like it hot” and “The Misfits” are my favorites.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League – Ending

Giuliano Evolution

Digital – Autodesk Sketchbook with Wacom Digital Small Stylus-pad
This is one of 10 pieces of artwork I sketched trying to use references from BoredPanda website’s 126 most beautiful movie stills. It was really fun doing it and made me appreciate photographic videos where composition makes a huge difference of how the story flows. This took much longer because I tried to learn Adobe After Effects for making these photos move. Please do check the other pieces on my Instagram @musteredsouls.
Now that Zack Snyder finally got to release his vision, this submission stands as a homage to the effort of both the movie crew and the audience for enduring 4 hours of continuous watch holding the needs to hit the loo, haha.

Little Forest: Friends and Makgeolli (Rice Wine) in the Winter Night

Ban Little Forest

Pencil drawing
This is pencil drawing of my favorite scene in the movie “Little Forest (Korean version)”.One day, Hye-won who likes cooking made Makgeolli (rice wine) by herself. During the winter night, she had it together with her old friends, Eun-sook and Jae-ha in her house. In this scene, all of them were relaxed and laughed a lot while they were enjoying Makgeolli and Korean pancake. Happiness comes from simple things. Doing what you like and sharing it with your close friends could make life much happier. Like Hye-won, I aslo want to make my own Makgeolli some day and share it with my friends during the winter night or rainy day.

Mickey “One Punch” O’Neil

Marc Mickey "One Punch" O'Neil

Digital: Photoshop

The category this time around is Movies and I figured I would do a take on my favourite movie character, Mickey “One Punch” O’Neil from my favourite movie Snatch. He is such a character! A humorous, witty, smart, worn in, diligent bareknuckle boxer from Ireland who is basically impossible to understand! This is a digital art piece created in Photoshop. Enjoy!

Parasite

Mai Parasite

Acrylic 24x30cm on canvas
After an art block in 2020, I watched Parasite and was absolutely transformed by it. It was the first time in months that I sat in front of my canvas and knew exactly what was going to happen. Something clicked, because I combined my love of film with my art and it resulted in one of my favorite pieces. 24x30cm Acrylic on canvas.

The Grand Palaver Poster

Paul Grand Palaver

The Grand Palaver – MSquare Productions
Mixed Media movie poster on Strathmore 2017
I was lucky to be chosen to paint this movie poster. There were a lot of intimidating things to get right, especially the likenesses and patterns. Fortunately, I didn’t have to paint the letters!
I have favorite parts of movies and I admire the work of many people who create them. But movies that I like playing in the background while I’m working are: Skyfall, The Crazies, Avengers: Endgame

Movie Recommendations from our Artist

Ban Rak Sun

My favorite movies are:
Joint Security Area (Korean movie) – 2000
After a shooting incident at the North/South Korean border/DMZ leaves 2 North Korean soldiers dead, a neutral Swiss/Swedish team investigates what actually happened.

Little Forest (Korean movie) – 2018
A young woman grows tired of life in the city and returns to her hometown in the countryside.

Life is beautiful (Italian movie) – 1997
When an open-minded Jewish librarian and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor, and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp.

Marc Kuegle

My top 3:
Snatch – Directed by Guy Ritchie (2000)
Unscrupulous boxing promoters, violent bookmakers, a Russian gangster, incompetent amateur robbers and supposedly Jewish jewelers fight to track down a priceless stolen diamond.

Lucky Number Slevin – Directed by Paul McGuigan (2006)
A case of mistaken identity lands Slevin into the middle of a war being plotted by two of the city’s most rival crime bosses. Under constant surveillance by Detective Brikowski and assassin Goodkat, he must get them before they get him.

Garden State – Directed by Zach Braff (2004)
A quietly troubled young man returns home for his mother’s funeral after being estranged from his family for a decade.

Ymir

It is absolutely impossible for me to decide which three movies are my all-time favourites. So, I’ve decided to talk about directors instead of movies:

1. Stanley Kubrick’s films: Especially “2001: A Space Odyssey” and “The Shining”

2. Ridley Scott’s films: Especially “The Alien” and “Kingdom of Heaven”

3. Alfred Hitchcock’s films: Especially “The Psycho” and “Rebecca”

Besides these, I love Tarantino and Aronofsky movies, and I am deeply bound up with “The Lord of the Rings.”

Venky

Here are my top 3 movies I could think of as of now) :

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013) – Every time I see it, it’s refreshing and inspires me to seek opportunities to be pushed into the pursuit for inner happiness and “no regrets Life”.
When both he and a colleague are about to lose their job, Walter takes action by embarking on an adventure more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined.

Interstellar (2014) – for its visual spectacle, scientific vision and a wonderful spill of emotion onto logic.
A team of explorers travel through a wormhole in space in an attempt to ensure humanity’s survival.

Predestination (2014) – for its intricate plot of time travel, convoluted storyline that’s both mind boggling and mind bending, and in the end makes you feel like ” well, That happened!”
For his final assignment, a top temporal agent must pursue the one criminal that has eluded him throughout time. The chase turns into a unique, surprising and mind-bending exploration of love, fate, identity and time travel taboos.

Austin Girl

Jam Austin Girl

I’m working on my fashion collection based on Austin Powers movies and 60’s fashion so i decided to design one more look and combine it the colors from a poster of the movie co-starring Beyoncé (Austin Powers in Goldmember) to create a movie poster. I’d say the part that i enjoyed the most was lettering the font though.

The VVitching Hour

Ink Pens on Canson 300 gr hot press watercolour paper
This work is inspired by the film, “The VVitch: A New England Folktale” (2015), directed by Robert Eggers which tells the story of a Puritan family living in 1630s America. Banished from their colony over a religious dispute, the family is forced to live in the wilderness where the children attract the attention of a mysterious evil being lurking in the forest. Although it is not one of my favourites, being a fan of dark folktales about witches, the film deeply affected me with its ambiance.
The work depicts the final scene in which the pure and innocent daughter of the family is finally tempted by Satan and joins the witches’ ritual in the forest to become one of them. The name of the work is inspired by a song called “The Witching Hour” by one of my favourite metal bands Symphony X.

Fun fact: The director chooses the film’s title as “The VVitch” with double v instead of the common spelling “witch” stating that he has found a pamphlet from the Jacobean Era about witch hunts on which the word is spelled as the former.

Home Cinema

Andi Cyborg Pretty
Digital: Cinema4D, Octane X & vectron and J-wildfire

This fan art is inspired by Spiderman Homecoming movie and the fac that in these times, it is wise to watch movies on your Home Cinema system than in a cinema theatre…

Created with Cinema 4D, rendered with Redshift and used one of my fractal art in the neon frame done with J-wildfire. TV is screening one of my previous 3D fractal art using Cinema4D, Octane X & vectron and J-wildfire.

I’m Forrest… Forrest Gump

Oley Forrest Gump

Gouache color on paper
I love Forrest Gump. “Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you will get.” This message from the movie sounds true to me, just as you never know your destiny until you open up and live with it.

The Wolf of Bangkok

Shot on GoPro Hero 2018.
Ah! Those days when we can go out with friends and shoot something on a camera!
The best and shortest way to explain this would be that, Vidhvat and me we wanted to make something weird. I uploaded this video on my youtube channel called MOVIE MESSENGER which was dedicated to my love of movies, I just wish I could do more videos like these and collaborate with other creative souls.
