“Artists are truly connected, we wouldn’t say that we are a hive mind but great minds think alike. As proven by June who pointed out that the theme is STILL LIFE after DEATH for those who are following our UNZINE universe. Beyond a theme, STILL LIFE is an important phase as a picture maker in our opinion even when it’s still life photography we are seeing the reality from the point of view of a human being.
If we stare longer at STILL LIFE, we can also say that it represents an important aspect of ART that plays with your mind. As realistic objects are drawn they are still drawn, as real the painting looks it’s still a painting. The ability to fool the audience even for just a nano second IS magic. We should never forget that.
It’s like when you hear a joke and react “that’s not true” yes it’s not true it’s a joke just like we don’t look at a painting of a tree and react “that’s not a tree” because that’s a given.
Another big aspect is the meditative experience of focus STILL LIFE practice can make us feel.
We were taken aback by the way this theme was interpreted, from remixing classic depiction to imaginary still life, a new gallery by our community of artists is waiting for you. Don’t be shy to reach out to our artists to see what else they do and say BKK UNZINE sent ya!

Tune your colors up
Gouache on paper
This work has been done under the topic of “Let’s tune your colors up” of the Triplet Artgroup (IG: tripletartgroup). It was also my 3rd day of two weeks quarantine after arriving to Korea from Thailand last year. I had very hard time during this quarantine which I never want to experience ever again. I was unstable and anxious during that period. For some reason, I thought I lost all connections and was totally alone. At least, I felt relaxed when I did this painting as there were friends who were painting under the same theme in other place (Even though they were far away from Korea!). When you know that you are not alone and that there is at least one other person who’s in the same shoes, hard time won’t be that hard.
귤(Kyul), Mandarin
Watercolor
Instead of my usual medium, watercolors, I used oil pastels for drawing 귤(Kyul), mandarin in Korean. Oil pastel was the perfect medium to express texture of the mandarin peel. Thick and heavy textures of oil pastels also took me back to my childhood when I used to play with crayons! I am planning to draw more mandarins to create a series of artwork. I am curious to see how the final results will be.

Original 3D personal project artwork created for this month theme for BKK Unzine. I tried to capture the essence of a still life classic art but doing in it in 3D instead, being kind of a middle ground between painting and photography. Once again I took opportunity of this month theme to explore some new tools:-)

Sculpted Still life
Ink on paper and finishing done digitally in CLIP STUDIO PAINT
I have to give credit to Venky, my friend who runs this magazine with me, he submitted a photo of figurines as STILL LIFE and that gave me the idea to draw something I’ve been thinking of drawing for a long a time: CLASSIC SCULPTURES. I usually let my environment influence what I do with my drawing. In the podcast I was listening to, they mentioned pop art so I wanted to make it interesting by putting on some colored screentones and put a phone in his hand, with the yellow background I use for my comic strips.
