Stories of Our Own: UNZINE Comics

At long last, it’s here! Unveiling bkk UNZINE’s own comics anthology magazine

bkk UNZINE has always admired comic book art, and this year will focus on this incredibly diverse medium with a number of sequential art and storytelling exhibits and activities, culminating in our fourth annual (and biggest ever) BKK Comics Art Festival in October. It’s been a long-gestating dream of bkk UNZINE founder Boris Aravindabalan’s to publish our own comics, and now we are taking our first step in realizing this vision…

We’re so thrilled to announce the release of the first print issue of our very own comics anthology magazine, UNZINE Comics!

The comic art form is such a special medium, with its blend of narrative and visuals, and after showcasing the talents of the incredible comic book artists working in Thailand, it’s time for bkk UNZINE to make the leap producing and publishing comics under our own banner. In the pages of UNZINE Comics we’re very excited to curate the best collection of sequential art storytelling to represent bkk UNZINE and what our stable of talent has to offer.

This extremely limited initial printing features short stories by Aaron Schmidt, Sooth, Nirut Chamsuwan and one written by Tom McLean and illustrated by Aravindabalan himself, better known as Sketchman Boris, who also provided the cover to this edition. The cover image links to the BKK Comics Art Festival, with that event’s mascot, Om, embarking on his quest, much like the beginning of UNZINE Comics’ journey in bringing audiences new and unique comic stories. Proceeds from sales of this issue will go to making the BKK Comics Art Festival our most expansive and program-packed celebration of comics storytelling yet this coming October at BACC.

Stories featured in the first issue of UNZINE Comics

The comic art form is such a special medium, with its blend of narrative and visuals, and after showcasing the talents of the incredible comic book artists working in Thailand, it’s time for bkk UNZINE to make the leap producing and publishing comics under our own banner.

It’s our goal to showcase how versatile and immersive comic storytelling can be, so UNZINE Comics aims to feature stories of any genre or style, and we welcome interested authors to join us in this venture as we continue to publish subsequent issues for what we hope is a long time to come.

UNZINE Comics can be purchased from bkk UNZINE and UNZINE 95 directly while supplies last. This is a very low print run, so don’t miss out.

Sales for UNZINE Comics were open at this year’s Bangkok International Book Fair on Thursday March 27th at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center, where bkk UNZINE had a booth in collaboration with Moon Manga Museum. Thanks to all who dropped by to visit us and pick up a copy of this special publication (and weathered the earthquake!); we truly appreciate the kind support.
